When a domain name expires at Nixzoehost, it doesn't immediately become available for someone else to buy. Instead, it enters a structured "deactivation lifecycle" regulated by ICANN (the global domain authority).
Understanding this timeline is crucial because the further a domain moves into this cycle, the more expensive and difficult it becomes to get back.
The Domain Expiration Timeline
Phase 1: Expiration & Deactivation (Day 1)
The moment the expiration date passes, the domain is deactivated.
-
What happens: Your website will stop loading, and your professional email addresses (e.g.,
info@yourdomain.com) will stop receiving messages. -
Status: The domain is still in your Nixzoehost account, but it is "parked" by the registry.
Phase 2: Renewal Grace Period (Days 130)
This is your safety net. Most common domains (like .com, .net, .org) stay in this phase for about 30 days.
-
Cost: You can renew the domain at the standard renewal price.
-
Action: Simply log in to your dashboard and pay the renewal invoice. Your services will typically resume within a few hours.
Phase 3: Redemption Grace Period (Days 3170)
If you ignore the warnings and the 30-day grace period ends, the domain is "deleted" from our system and sent back to the central registry.
-
Cost: To rescue the domain now, you must pay the standard renewal fee PLUS a high Redemption Fee (often $100$200).
-
Status: The domain is no longer in your active list. You must contact Nixzoehost Support to manually process a redemption request.
Phase 4: Pending Delete (Days 7175)
This is the "point of no return."
-
What happens: The domain is locked by the registry and is being prepared for release.
-
Status: Neither you nor Nixzoehost can renew or redeem the domain at this stage. It is effectively "in the trash" waiting to be emptied.
Phase 5: Released to Public (Day 76+)
The domain is officially deleted from the registry's database and becomes available for anyone to register on a first-come, first-served basis.
-
The Risk: "Domain squatters" and automated bots often monitor these releases. If your domain has any value or traffic, it will likely be snatched up within seconds of being released.
Important Exceptions
-
Country Code Domains (ccTLDs): Domains like .DE (Germany) or .EU (Europe) often have no grace period. They go straight into "Redemption/Quarantine" the moment they expire, meaning you face high fees from Day 1.
-
Auctions: Some registries may put your domain up for "expired auction" during the grace period. If someone wins the auction, they get the domain as soon as your grace period ends.
How to avoid this?
The best defense is a good offense. Go to your Nixzoehost Client Area, navigate to Domains > My Domains, and ensure Auto-Renew is toggled to ON. Also, keep a valid credit card on file under Billing > Payment Methods.
