TLDs' grace periods Print

Not all domains are treated equally when they expire. Depending on the extension (TLD), the amount of time you have to "rescue" a domain varies. At Nixzoehost, we follow the industry-standard timelines provided by the central registries.

Here is a guide to understanding the different phases of a domain's life after its expiration date.

Understanding TLD Grace Periods

When a domain expires, it moves through several "life stages." Understanding these is the difference between a standard renewal and paying a heavy penalty to get your name back.

1. The Renewal Grace Period (Standard Price)

For most Generic TLDs (like .com, .net, .org), you have a window immediately after expiration where you can still renew at the normal price.

  • Duration: Usually 0 to 30 days.

  • Status: The website and email will stop working, but the domain is still in your Nixzoehost account.

  • Cost: Standard renewal fee.

2. The Redemption Grace Period (High Cost)

If you miss the first window, the domain is "deleted" by the registrar and sent back to the registry.

  • Duration: Usually 30 to 70 days post-expiry.

  • Status: The domain is no longer in your active list. To get it back, we must file a special "Redemption Request" with the registry.

  • Cost: Standard renewal fee PLUS a significant Redemption Fee (often $100$200 USD depending on the TLD).

3. Pending Delete (Point of No Return)

Once a domain enters this phase, it can no longer be renewed or redeemed.

  • Duration: 5 days.

  • Status: The registry is clearing the domain from their database. It will soon be released for public registration on a first-come, first-served basis.

Grace Period Variations by TLD

Some country-specific domains (ccTLDs) have very different rules. Here are common examples seen at Nixzoehost:

TLD Type Renewal Grace Period Redemption Period
.COM / .NET 30 Days 30 Days
.UK / .CO.UK 30 Days 60 Days
.DE (Germany) None 30 Days (Directly into "RESTORE")
.EU (Europe) None 40 Days
.AU (Australia) 30 Days None (Goes to "Pending Delete")

Crucial Note for .DE and .EU: These domains do not have a standard "grace period." The moment they expire, they are taken offline and moved into a "Redemption/Quarantine" status immediately. You will have to pay the higher restoration fee from Day 1 of expiration.

Pro-Tips for Nixzoehost Users

  • Check the TLD Rules: If you own a specialized domain (like .bank, .law, or a country code), check the specific registry rules in our Knowledge Base, as they are often much stricter than .com.

  • Don't Wait: If your domain expires, renew it within the first 24 hours. This ensures you avoid the risk of the domain moving into the expensive Redemption phase.

  • Update Your Email: We send multiple warnings (30, 15, 5, and 1 day before expiry). Ensure your contact email at Nixzoehost is one you check daily.
