What to Do with an Unwanted Domain?

1. Let It Expire (The Hands-Off Approach)

If you have no intention of using or selling the domain, you can simply allow it to reach its expiration date.

  • Turn Off Auto-Renew: This is the most important step. In your Nixzoehost Dashboard, go to Domains > My Domains and ensure the Auto-Renew toggle is set to OFF.

  • What happens next: Once the expiration date passes, the domain will stop working. After a grace period (usually 3045 days), it will eventually return to the public pool for someone else to register.

2. Sell the Domain (The Marketplace Approach)

If your domain is short, catchy, or contains popular keywords, it may have resale value.

  • List it on a Marketplace: You can list your domain on major industry sites like Sedo, Afternic, or Flippa.

  • Set a "For Sale" Page: You can use your Nixzoehost DNS to point the domain to a simple landing page that says "This Domain is For Sale" with your contact information.

  • The Process: If someone buys it, you will provide them with an Auth Code (EPP Code) from your dashboard to transfer the domain to their registrar.

3. Push to Another Nixzoehost User

If you know someone else who wants the domain, you can move it to their account instantly. This is called a "Domain Push."

  • The Benefit: Its free and happens immediately.

  • The Catch: The person receiving the domain must also have a Nixzoehost account.

4. Redirect to Your Main Website

Just because you don't want the domain for its original purpose doesn't mean it's useless. You can "forward" it to your current website.

  • SEO & Branding: If the unwanted domain is similar to your main one (e.g., a common misspelling), redirecting it can capture lost traffic.

  • How to do it: Use the "Redirects" tool in your Nixzoehost cPanel to point the old domain to your new URL.

A Note on Refunds

Standard domain registrations are final and non-refundable because Nixzoehost must pay the central registry the moment the name is claimed.

  • The 5-Day Window: In very rare cases, if you made a typo and caught it within minutes or hours, some registries (like .com) may allow a "tasting period" cancellation. Contact our support immediately to see if your specific extension allows this.
