.ECO Registration Requirements

The .ECO extension is backed by major environmental organizations (like WWF and Greenpeace). Because it is a "trusted" domain, there is a two-step process to get your website live.

Step 1: The "ServerHold" Status

Immediately after you purchase your domain through Nixzoehost, you will notice that the domain does not resolve (it won't load a website). This is normal. The registry places all new .ECO domains on ServerHold until you complete your profile.

Step 2: The .ECO Pledge & Profile

Within a few hours of registration, you will receive an email from the registry (usually from activate@profiles.eco) with the subject: "Activate [yourdomain].eco".

To activate your domain, you must:

  1. Take the Pledge: You must publicly commit to "support positive change for the planet and to be honest when sharing information on environmental actions."

  2. Choose Your Category: Identify yourself as an individual, business, or non-profit.

  3. List Your Actions: Briefly describe the environmental actions or sustainability goals you are working toward.

Step 3: Domain Activation

Once you submit your profile, the .ECO registry will review it.

  • Approval: Most profiles are approved quickly. Once approved, the "ServerHold" is removed, and your website will start working automatically.

  • Annual Updates: To keep your .ECO domain active, the registry requires you to review and update your profile once a year to show continued commitment to environmental goals.

Important Notes for Nixzoehost Users

  • Who can register? Anyone can register a .ECO domain (businesses, individuals, or NGOs), as long as they are willing to take the pledge and disclose their sustainability efforts.

  • Lost Activation Email: If you don't receive the activation email, check your spam folder or visit profiles.eco to request a resend using your registrant email address.

  • Non-Compliance: If you do not complete the profile within 12 months of purchase, the registry reserves the right to cancel the domain without a refund.

  • The Trustmark: Once your profile is active, you are eligible to display the .ECO Trustmark on your website to show visitors you are a verified member of the community.
