Email Security: What are SPF, DKIM, and DMARC?

If your emails are landing in the "Junk" folder of your recipients, it is likely because your domain lacks proper authentication. Major providers like Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook now require three specific records to verify your identity.

The "Big Three" Explained:

  • SPF (Sender Policy Framework): Think of this as an "Authorized Personnel Only" list. It is a record in your DNS that tells the world which servers are allowed to send email on behalf of your domain.

  • DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): This adds a "Digital Seal" to every email you send. The receiving server uses a public key in your DNS to verify that the email was actually sent by you and wasn't tampered with mid-transit.

  • DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance): This is the instruction manual. It tells receiving servers what to do if the SPF or DKIM checks fail (e.g., "Do nothing," "Put in Spam," or "Reject the email entirely").

The Nixzoehost Advantage:

When you create an email account through our dashboard, we automatically generate and apply SPF and DKIM records for you. However, if you use external services (like a third-party CRM or newsletter tool), you must manually update these records in your DNS Zone Editor to maintain high deliverability.
