Can I Transfer an Expired Domain?
A common myth in the industry is that once a domain expires, it is "stuck" at the current registrar. In 2026, under ICANNs current policies, this is largely false.
The Reality: You Can Still Move
Most domains (like .com, .net, .org) can be transferred even if they expired yesterday. As long as the domain is in its Auto-Renew Grace Period (usually the first 30 days after expiration) and not yet in "Redemption," a transfer is possible.
The Risks & Warnings
-
Downtime: The moment a domain expires, your website and email will likely stop working. A transfer takes 57 days. Your site will remain offline for that entire duration until the transfer to Nixzoehost is complete.
-
The "Late Renewal" Trap: If your domain is within 7 days of expiring, we strongly recommend renewing it at your current registrar first. This ensures your site stays online while the transfer happens in the background.
-
Redemption: If your domain has been expired for more than 30 days, it enters the "Redemption" phase. At this point, it cannot be transferred. You must pay a high recovery fee to your current registrar before you can move it to Nixzoehost.
