Article: Why Did My Transfer Fail? Print

  • 0

If your transfer status shows as "Canceled" or "Rejected," it is almost always due to one of the following four reasons. Understanding the specific error code will help you fix it in minutes.

  • Invalid Auth/EPP Code: The "key" provided was incorrect. This often happens due to a simple copy-paste error (like including an extra space) or because the code was regenerated at the old registrar after you submitted it to us.

  • Domain is Locked: The most common reason for failure. Your old registrar still has the "Registrar Lock" enabled. Even with a valid code, the transfer cannot proceed until that lock is toggled OFF.

  • The 60-Day Lock: Per ICANN regulations, a domain cannot be moved if it was registered or transferred within the last 60 days. In this case, the registry itself will automatically reject the attempt.

  • Expired or Redemption Status: If a domain reaches "Expired" status during the transfer process, the old registrar may pull it back. If it has reached "Redemption," it is completely ineligible for transfer until it is renewed at the original host.
