. Transfer Eligibility: Understanding the "60-Day Rule"

Before you start, ensure your domain is actually eligible to move. ICANN (the global governing body for domains) enforces strict rules to prevent "Domain Slamming."

The 60-Day Rule

You cannot transfer a domain if:

  • It was registered within the last 60 days.

  • It was transferred from another registrar within the last 60 days.

  • (In some cases) You changed the Registrant Name or Organization details in the last 60 days.

Other Common Eligibility Blocks:

  • Expired Status: If a domain is already expired, most registrars will block the transfer until you renew it with them.

  • Redemption Status: If the domain is more than 30 days past expiration, it is in "Redemption" and cannot be transferred.

  • Legal/Dispute Lock: If the domain is involved in a trademark dispute or legal action, it is locked at the registry level.

Eligibility Checklist

  • [ ] Is the domain older than 60 days?

  • [ ] Do you have at least 15 days left before it expires? (Recommended)

  • [ ] Do you have access to the email address listed in WHOIS?

Nixzoehost Quick Tip: If your transfer fails because of the 60-day rule, don't worry! You can still host your website with us by simply updating your Nameservers at your current registrar and waiting for the 60-day window to close before moving the billing to us.
