What should I do if my Private Key was lost or deleted?

The Private Key is the most important part of your SSL certificate. It is the "secret half" that stays on your server and allows your website to decode encrypted data.

If you accidentally delete your Private Key, or if you move to a new server and forget to bring the key with you, your SSL certificate will become invalid and unusable.

Can a lost Private Key be recovered?

No. Because of how high-level encryption works, a Private Key cannot be "recovered," "re-sent," or "re-created" from the certificate file. If the key is gone, it is gone forever. This is a security featureif keys were easy to recover, they would be easy for hackers to steal.

The Solution: The "Reissue" Process

Don't worryyou do not need to buy a new SSL certificate. At Nixzoehost, you can "Reissue" your certificate for free. This essentially replaces your old, broken certificate with a brand-new one that matches a new key.

Step 1: Generate a New CSR and Private Key

  1. Log in to your cPanel.

  2. Go to SSL/TLS Manager > CSR.

  3. Generate a brand-new CSR. This will automatically create a new Private Key on your server.

Step 2: Reissue the Certificate

  1. Log in to your Nixzoehost Client Area.

  2. Go to Services > My SSL Certificates.

  3. Select your certificate and click the Reissue button.

  4. Paste your new CSR into the box and submit it.

Step 3: Re-Validate and Install

  1. Complete the domain validation (usually via an email or DNS record).

  2. Once the CA sends your new certificate, install it in cPanel. It will now perfectly match the new Private Key sitting on your server.

How to Prevent This in the Future

  • Do not delete "Private Keys" in cPanel: Many users delete keys in the SSL/TLS Manager thinking they are clearing out "old files." Never delete a key unless you are 100% sure the certificate it belongs to has expired.

  • Backup your Keys: If you are moving to a new hosting provider, always export your Private Keys along with your website files.

  • Use the Nixzoehost SSL Plugin: Our built-in tools handle the management of keys for you, significantly reducing the risk of accidental deletion.

Summary Table: Lost Key Scenarios
