At Nixzoehost, we understand that your digital presence is constantly evolving. You might launch a new brand or add a client portal months after your initial SSL setup. One of the greatest advantages of a Multi-Domain (SAN) SSL is that it is not a "static" productit can grow with you.
Yes, you can add new domains to an active Multi-Domain SSL certificate at any time. However, because an SSL file is cryptographically sealed once issued, you cannot simply "edit" the existing file. You must perform a Reissue.
The Process of Adding a New Domain
If you have an active Multi-Domain SSL and need to include a new site, follow these steps:
1. Check Your "Seats"
Every Multi-Domain SSL has a set number of "seats" or slots.
-
If you have unused slots (e.g., you bought a 5-domain pack but are only using 3), you can skip to Step 2.
-
If you have used all your slots, go to your Nixzoehost Client Area and select Buy More Domain Seats for that specific certificate.
2. Trigger a Reissue
-
Navigate to your SSL Certificates list in the Nixzoehost dashboard.
-
Select your certificate and click the Reissue button.
-
Submit a New CSR: It is best practice to generate a fresh CSR on your server to keep your security modern for 2026 standards.
-
Add the New Domain: You will see a list of your current domains. Simply add the new domain name into one of the empty "SAN" or "Add-on domain" fields.
3. Re-Validate
The Certificate Authority (CA) needs to verify that you own the new domain. You will need to complete a quick Domain Control Validation (DCV) via Email, DNS, or HTTP for the newly added name.
-
Note: Usually, you do not need to re-validate the original domains that were already on the certificate.
4. Re-Install
Once the CA issues the updated certificate, you will receive a new file. You must install this new file on your server. This new file will now protect all your previous domains plus the new one.
Important Rules for Adding Domains
| Rule | Details |
| No Pro-Rating | Additional seats purchased mid-term usually cost the same as if bought at the start. |
| Shared Expiration | The new domain will share the exact same expiration date as the original certificate. It does not get its own fresh year of service. |
| "www" Counts | Remember that example.com and www.example.com take up two separate slots in a Multi-Domain certificate. |
| 2026 Refresh | If you add a domain while the certificate is active, the final file will still be subject to the 200-day industry validity limit. |
What if I want to remove or swap a domain?
The process is exactly the same! If you stop using oldproject.com and want to replace it with newstartup.com, you simply perform a Reissue, delete the old name from the SAN field, and type in the new one. At Nixzoehost, these "swaps" are free as long as you have the available seats.
