How many domains can I secure with my Multi-Domain SSL?

A Multi-Domain SSL certificate is one of the most scalable security tools available at Nixzoehost. It is designed to grow alongside your digital portfolio, allowing you to secure multiple unique websites under a single management umbrella.

Here is a breakdown of the capacity and seat limits for our Multi-Domain (SAN) certificates.

The Basic Capacity: 3-100 Domains

Most Multi-Domain certificates at Nixzoehost (including the popular PositiveSSL Multi-Domain) follow a standard "seat" structure:

  • Included by Default: Your base purchase includes 3 domains (or "seats"). This typically covers your primary domain and two additional ones.

  • The Upper Limit: You can expand a single certificate to secure up to 100 unique domains or subdomains by purchasing additional SAN seats.

  • High-Volume Options: If you manage a massive network of sites, certain enterprise-level Multi-Domain certificates can be expanded even further, up to 250 domains, though these usually require a custom quote from our support team.

What Counts as a "Domain Seat"?

It is important to understand how the Certificate Authority (CA) counts your entries. Each unique string of text is considered one seat.

Domain Entry Seat Count Reason
example.com 1 Seat The root domain.
www.example.com 1 Seat Note: Unlike single-domain SSLs, Multi-Domain SSLs count "www" as a separate entry.
blog.example.com 1 Seat A specific subdomain.
completely-different.net 1 Seat An entirely different TLD/Brand.

Pro-Tip: If you have 10 domains and you want to secure both the www and non-www versions of all of them, you will need 20 seats total.

Can I add seats later?

Yes. You do not need to know your final domain count at the time of purchase.

  1. Start Small: You can buy a certificate with 3 seats today.

  2. Add on the Fly: Six months from now, if you launch a new site, you can purchase an additional "SAN slot" from your Nixzoehost Client Area.

  3. Unified Expiration: Any seats you add later will always share the same expiration date as the original certificate, keeping your renewal schedule simple.

When to Switch to a Wildcard SSL

While a Multi-Domain SSL is great for different brands, it may not be the most cost-effective choice if you have dozens of subdomains for one brand.

  • Use Multi-Domain if: You have site-a.com, site-b.net, and site-c.org.

  • Use Wildcard if: You have one-site.com and want to secure shop., dev., mail., portal., and unlimited other subdomains. A Wildcard SSL covers unlimited subdomains for a flat price.
