An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique numeric code that identifies your websites server on the internet. Think of it as the "digital phone number" for your hosting account. While humans use domain names (like nixzoehost.com) to browse the web, computers use IP addresses to find and talk to each other.
IPv4 Format
The most common format (IPv4) is a 32-bit numeric address shown as four numbers separated by dots (e.g., 192.168.1.1). Each number ranges from 0 to 255.
Understanding IP Classes & Subnets
IP addresses are grouped into "subnets." These groups help organize how many addresses belong to a specific network. At Nixzoehost, our infrastructure uses these various classes to ensure stable routing:
-
Class C: The first three groups are the same (e.g.,
4.4.3.5and4.4.3.118). -
Class B: The first two groups are the same (e.g.,
4.4.3.5and4.4.7.45). -
Class A: Only the first group is the same (e.g.,
4.2.4.6and4.87.97.110).
Static vs. Dynamic IPs
-
Static IP: A permanent address that never changes. This is standard for web servers so your website is always found at the same location.
-
Dynamic IP: A temporary address that changes every time a device connects to the internet (common for home Wi-Fi or mobile data).
The Future: IPv6
Because the world is running out of IPv4 addresses, a newer standard called IPv6 is being deployed. These addresses are much longer and look like this: 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334. NixZoeHost systems are built to support the transition to this new standard.
